From Holographic Safaris to Lake Michigan Beaches: The Best Things to Do in Lake County, IL

Posted on August 29, 2026 by Dania Rahal

Lake County, Illinois sits at the northeastern edge of the state, where rolling prairies, glacial lakes, wetlands, and a stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline create a surprisingly diverse playground. Many visitors treat the area as a quick stop between Chicago and Wisconsin, but that overlooks just how much there is to explore. The county holds more than 30,000 acres of forest preserve land, dozens of inland lakes, historic downtowns, family attractions, and seasonal festivals. A well-planned weekend can include a quiet walk through a quaking bog in the morning, a roller coaster in the afternoon, and an immersive indoor adventure before dinner.

Because the region blends suburban convenience with natural beauty, it works well for day trips, school outings, date nights, and multi-generational family travel. The variety is the real draw: one part of Lake County feels like a peaceful nature retreat, while another is packed with amusement rides, shopping, and interactive exhibits. Whether you want to paddle across a glacial lake, sample small-batch ice cream, or walk through a holographic ocean scene, the options are more varied than many visitors expect.

Outdoor Escapes and Natural Wonders in Lake County

For many residents and visitors, the best starting point is the Lake County Forest Preserves system, which protects prairies, woodlands, marshes, and lakefront bluffs. One of the most unique sites is Volo Bog State Natural Area in Ingleside. Volo Bog is the only open-water quaking bog in Illinois and has been designated a National Natural Landmark. A floating boardwalk lets visitors walk directly over a mat of sphagnum moss, sedges, and carnivorous plants while interpretive signs explain the bog’s rare ecology. The site is quiet, compact, and surprisingly dramatic, especially in early morning when birds are most active. It is a favorite for photographers, nature lovers, and anyone who wants to see a landscape that feels far older than the surrounding suburbs.

Water recreation is another major part of the Lake County outdoor scene. Chain O’Lakes State Park in Spring Grove offers boating, fishing, kayaking, and shoreline picnicking across a connected system of lakes and channels. Anglers target bass, walleye, muskie, and panfish, while families can rent boats or simply enjoy the open water views. For a more managed outdoor experience, Independence Grove Forest Preserve in Libertyville centers on a 115-acre lake with a swimming beach, boat rentals, paved trails, and a native garden area. It is one of the easiest places to spend half a day outdoors without leaving the county.

Those who want a true Great Lakes experience should head east to Illinois Beach State Park in Zion. The park protects more than six miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and includes dunes, wetlands, hiking trails, swimming areas, and campgrounds. It is one of the few places in Illinois where you can hear real wave action and watch the sun rise over open water. Nearby, Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve offers bluff-top trails with sweeping lake views and excellent birdwatching. Spring and fall bring migrating songbirds and raptors, while summer invites picnics on the grass above the shoreline. Across these natural areas, the appeal is not just recreation but variety: forest, bog, prairie, river, and beach all exist within a manageable drive.

Family-Friendly Attractions and Interactive Indoor Experiences

Lake County is especially strong when it comes to attractions that keep children, teens, and adults entertained together. Six Flags Great America in Gurnee remains the area’s biggest adrenaline draw, with roller coasters, family rides, live entertainment, and the attached Hurricane Harbor water park. It is a full-day destination in summer, but it also hosts seasonal events such as Fright Fest in autumn and Holiday in the Park during winter. Because it draws large crowds, visitors often pair a theme park day with a slower, indoor activity on the following day.

For a more relaxed family outing, Lambs Farm in Libertyville offers a petting zoo, carousel, miniature golf, and a farmyard where children can interact with animals. Its bakery and gift shop make it easy to extend the visit without rushing. Another favorite is the Volo Auto Museum, where classic cars, Hollywood vehicles, and antique displays appeal to car enthusiasts and curious kids alike. The museum is located in Volo and works well as a stop between outdoor activities or as a rainy-day plan.

One of the more distinctive ways to round out a family itinerary is the immersive holographic attraction in Vernon Hills. If you are building a list of things to do in lake county il, this stop offers something different from a standard zoo, museum, or playground. Instead of VR headsets, visitors wear lightweight 3D glasses and walk through laser-light scenes featuring dinosaurs, marine life, space, and wildlife. The experience is indoor, climate-controlled, and designed to feel active rather than passive. That makes it especially useful for birthday parties, scout groups, school trips, and multi-generational outings when weather is unpredictable. Pair it with a morning at a forest preserve or an afternoon of shopping in nearby Gurnee, and you have a balanced day that appeals to different ages and energy levels.

Small-Town Strolls, Seasonal Events, and Local Flavor

Lake County’s downtowns are part of the experience, not just a place to eat after a hike. Downtown Libertyville has a walkable stretch of restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, and historic buildings. In warmer months, its outdoor dining and farmers market draw a steady crowd. Long Grove is known for its covered bridge, candy shops, and cobblestone-style walkways, and it hosts popular seasonal festivals throughout the year. Lake Forest offers a more manicured, historic atmosphere with Market Square, while Highland Park combines lakefront neighborhoods with a lively downtown and access to Ravinia Festival, an outdoor music venue that has hosted major performers for more than a century. Ravinia’s lawn seating is a classic summer tradition, with visitors bringing picnics, blankets, and candles for evening concerts.

Seasonal events add another layer to the calendar. The Lake County Fair in Grayslake brings rides, livestock shows, demolition derby action, and fair food each summer. Long Grove’s Apple Fest and Chocolate Fest draw crowds in fall and spring, while winter brings holiday walks, light displays, and indoor markets across several towns. Farmers markets in Libertyville, Highland Park, and Wauconda give visitors a chance to sample local produce, baked goods, and handmade goods. For a low-key afternoon, the area’s breweries, wineries, and ice cream shops offer a way to slow down after a busy day of sightseeing.

Dining options range from lakefront seafood houses and old-school supper clubs to modern taco spots and family-run Italian restaurants. Because Lake County is home to a mix of long-established communities and newer development, the food scene feels approachable rather than trendy. Many visitors end up planning an entire day around a specific festival, trail, or attraction and then discovering a local downtown along the way. That mix of nature, entertainment, and small-town flavor is what makes the area more than a collection of suburbs.
